Sustainability M&S

As part of M&S’ Plan A the new concept store addressed the requirements to create a sustainable store and new retail dimension with a landmark development.

The design challenged all aspects of the internal and external environment through a forensic elemental approach and set key targets including reducing CO2 and Energy consumption by at least 50% compared with similar operating stores.

Targeting ‘Carbon Neutrality’ through passive design, hemp technology has been employed on walls, structural Glulam for framing and mixed-mode ventilation with heat exchange to manage the internal environment. An abundance of natural light and exposed soffits contribute to creating a dynamic retail environment.

"led a vision...which drove us to some great outcomes...with a robust understanding of sustainability"

Crispin Burridge, Head of Sustainable construction, M&S.
