The Iconic landmark Offshore Visitor Centre is located 3.5 km out into Swansea Bay and is representative of the clean renewable energy generated by the Tidal Lagoon. The building will be self-sufficient with all energy required being captured from renewable sources or transferred through recycling waste energy - a by-product of the turbine action.
Responding to its exposed marine environment and reflective of the oyster, a key part of Swansea Bay’s heritage, the building takes it form from an array of rugged shells arranged to provide shelter from the prevailing weather and wave action.
The interior is naturally lit through tall deep windows, similar to fissures in a cliff face and located to frame key views back to the landscape.
The internal curved walls are almost pearlescent reflecting the natural light deep into the gallery space to create a sense of place and wonder for this educational, cultural and leisure centre.
