The redevelopment of a rundown pub on this key corner High Street site to create a mix of residential apartments and a new important retail anchor store within five minutes walk of the mainline railway into Liverpool Street.
The design addresses the cacophonous elevational expressions of the existing townscape with a playful panel composition reflecting the random nature of high street. The relationship of the brick floating panels to create private balconies with a layered depth creates a sculptured form whilst recognising the brick materiality of the former Police Station. Both horizontal and vertical lines are expressed and the upper floor is raised to form a focal hinge to visually turn the street corner.
The design response creates a new building suitable for modern day living whilst recognising the exiting nature of the townscape, offering a pioneering development which is both playful and contributes to the re-invigoration of the town centre and investing in its potential.
